At five years old, children are entering an exciting new stage of their lives! Many have just started school, are building friendships, and becoming more confident in group environments. Cheerleading is a fantastic activity to support their development at this stage, combining movement, creativity, and teamwork in a fun and encouraging setting.
At Aqua Elite, our cheerleading sessions for 5 year olds are energetic, structured, and designed to help children stay active while developing new skills. Cheerleading blends elements of dance, gymnastics, and team sport, giving children a varied class that keeps them engaged while supporting their physical development.
Our classes run across Bromley and South East London in local schools and community venues, creating a welcoming environment where young athletes can grow in confidence.
Thinking Ballet or Athletics? Think Again!
When you’re choosing an activity for a 5 year old, it can be hard to know where to start- ballet, gymnastics, football… the list goes on. Cheerleading is a great option because it brings a bit of everything together in one class. Children get to dance, tumble, jump and work as part of a team- things here at Aqua Elite are never boring!
This mix of activities is perfect for children who are still figuring out what they love. One week they might enjoy the dancing, the next it’s the tumbling- cheerleading for 5 year olds keeps things exciting and helps them build a wide range of skills without ever feeling repetitive.
Children are constantly supported, cheered on and celebrated, which helps them feel good about trying new things and builds confidence naturally. We believe a positive attitude and can-do mindset are everything, and aim to instill this in all of our young cheerleaders.
Why Start Cheerleading at Age Five?
Starting school can be a big transition, and extracurricular activities can help children adjust to new routines and social environments. Cheerleading provides a positive outlet where children can move, express themselves, and work together as part of a team.
At this age, children are developing stronger coordination, better listening skills, and an increased ability to follow instructions. Cheerleading builds on these abilities through structured activities that are still playful and enjoyable.
Skills Children Begin to Develop
During classes, 5 year olds may begin learning:
- Basic cheer motions and simple chants
- Beginner tumbling skills such as forward rolls and balances
- Short dance routines performed to music
- Timing and rhythm when moving as a group
- Listening and following multi-step instructions
Skills are introduced gradually so children can build confidence while learning at their own pace.
Building Confidence and Friendships
Cheerleading is not just about physical development- it also helps children grow socially and emotionally. Classes encourage teamwork, turn-taking, and supporting one another, helping children build friendships outside of school.
Opportunities to Progress
If your child enjoys cheerleading, they can continue training with Aqua Elite all the way through to age 16. As skills and confidence grow, athletes may move into our pre-competition team, Mermaids, and potentially progress into competitive teams that perform at events across the country.
Try Out Aqua Elite Cheerleading
There’s no long-term commitment required to get started, making it easy for your child to give cheerleading for 5 year olds a try. We always welcome new starters to come along and experience a session before deciding if it’s the right fit for them. It’s a great way for children to see if they enjoy the class, meet the coaches and get a feel for the environment. If they love it and want to continue, sessions are then just £30 per month. This flexible approach means you can feel confident knowing it’s the right choice before committing.
